Day 91: Help girls in poverty get an education

Empowering women and educating girls around the world is absolutely critical to stopping climate change. Here’s why…

Imagine if someone donated $1 trillion to a charity like Unicef that helps pay for girls’ education in developing countries…

They’d be able to create thousands of schools. The students would grow up to work in skilled professions. They might develop business ideas or help other businesses become successful.

The people would be able to get out of poverty. The country would be able to transition to clean energy fast. The wealth of the people would increase making millions more customers to buy green products from other countries.

The truth is the girls I just described are more likely to leave school at a very young age, marry and have children who will struggle as they did. They won’t be able to transition to clean energy or become a part of the emerging green economy.

To help developing countries transition to clean energy it’s vital that we help all girls in developing countries receive a full secondary education.
Unicef educating girls charity
You can help by donating to a charity like the Malala Fund, Unicef, or One Girl.

Even though there are huge differences in emissions per capita across different countries, decreasing population growth means fewer emitters. Historically, when girls are educated and women have economic opportunities and full control over their reproductive choices, fertility rates fall. That’s why the nonprofit Project Drawdown has named family planning and educating girls among its top solutions for climate change.
