Day 28: Buy some local honey

Did you know you can help protect vital bees with this ‘nature hack’? Here’s how it works…

When you buy local honey, you increase demand, which means beekeepers need to create more beehives. This protects vital bee populations.
Bees need thousands of flowers to make honey. That means beekeepers need to protect the natural habitats of the bees, so they have an abundance of food and remain as healthy as possible.

The natural habitats of bees are also the home of millions of other animals. So by buying local honey you’re actually being a nature conservationist.

Look out for organic local honey. You don’t want to buy honey that’s been transported thousands of miles using fossil fuels because that defeats the purpose.
Carbon neutral local honey
Try searching for carbon-neutral honey that was made in your country, like these pots made in Wales by Mel Cilgwenyn.

If more people buy local honey, more people will have to create and maintain beehIves and the environments needed by productive bees. Increasing demand is the simplest way to increase supply.

Don’t forget to update your meal timetable with some honey in your dishes!

Enjoy your local honey and if you found this tip helpful, share it with a friend — the more people buy local honey, the more bees and their natural habitats are protected.
